Signature Scents That Belong to Your Brand
Scent branding means giving your business a signature scent: a fragrance created for your brand alone and used consistently wherever customers meet you, so they recognise you by smell the way they recognise your logo. We create signature scents for hotels, retailers, developers, offices and hospitality groups in Singapore, working with drom, our Munich perfume house, from brief to rollout.
A pleasant smell is not a brand scent. Library fragrances are sold to anyone, so a customer may meet “your” scent in a competitor’s lobby. A signature scent is distinctive, consistent and connected to everything else your brand does: its values, its design and the people it serves.
How Signature Scent Creation Works
We start with a brief: your brand, your spaces, your customers and the references that matter. A perfumer translates it into a small number of fragrance directions, which you trial in your own space rather than on a paper strip. The chosen direction is refined, tested for diffusion and stability, and rolled out through the right scent system for each location. Our guides on creating a signature scent and how to brief a perfumer go into more detail.
What a Signature Scent Does for Your Brand
A brand scent works quietly, every day, in every location.
Recognition customers can’t get anywhere else
Consistency across outlets and countries
A memorable first impression
An asset you can extend into products and gifts
Scent Design, Scent Logos and Scent Identity
You will see several terms for the same idea. Scent design is the creative process of composing the fragrance. A scent logo is the signature scent itself, used as a brand asset. Scent identity is the wider system: where the scent appears, how strongly and alongside what. We cover all three, and our article on what is a scent identity explains how they fit together.
Where Your Signature Scent Appears
Spaces. Lobbies, stores, showrooms and offices, diffused at a low, consistent level through standalone units or your ACMV.
Products and packaging. Room sprays, candles, reed diffusers and scented print, adapted for each format within IFRA guidance. See scenting products and packaging.
Events and gifts. Launches, roadshows and corporate gifts that carry the scent your customers know from your premises. See corporate gifts in your brand scent.
Library Scent or Bespoke Signature Scent?
A scent from our library is quick to start and works well for many businesses. A bespoke signature scent takes longer and costs more, but it is exclusive, designed around your brand and yours to extend. Many clients begin with a library scent and commission a signature scent once they know how scent works in their spaces. Both are formulated within the IFRA Standards.
Signature Scent in Practice
Standard Chartered’s signature scent for its consumer banking branches began with an immersion in the bank’s brand architecture, with brand, customer insight and visual merchandising teams across several markets, before any fragrance was considered. From the first brief to rollout across every location, we manage the process with you and the perfumer.
Brief & Discovery
We learn your brand, spaces, customers and references, and write the perfumer brief with you.
Creation & Trials
The perfumer develops fragrance directions, which you trial in your own space and refine.
Rollout & Extension
We install and calibrate the scent across your locations, then extend it into products, packaging and gifts.
Frequently asked questions
1. What is scent branding?
Using a distinctive signature scent as part of your brand identity, applied consistently wherever customers meet the brand.
2. How much does a signature scent cost?
It depends on the complexity of the brief, the number of trial rounds and how widely the scent will be used. We quote after a discovery session; ongoing diffusion is billed monthly like our other programmes.
3. How long does it take to create a signature scent?
Typically several weeks to a few months, depending on the brief, the trial rounds and testing in your space.
4. Will our signature scent be exclusive?
Exclusivity is agreed before work begins, so it is clear who owns the fragrance and where it can be used.
5. Can our scent be used in products as well as spaces?
Yes. The fragrance is adapted for each format, such as room sprays, candles or reed diffusers, and kept within IFRA guidance for that product type.
6. Can a small business have a signature scent?
Yes. A single boutique, clinic or studio can have a signature scent. Many start with a scent from our library and move to a bespoke one later.
7. What is a scent logo?
Another name for a signature scent: a fragrance that works as a brand asset, recognisable to customers in the same way as a visual logo.
8. What should we prepare before a scent branding project?
Your brand guidelines, a list of the spaces the scent will be used in, and some reference scents or places you like and dislike. We help you turn these into a perfumer brief.
