Ambient Scenting: The Complete Guide to Scent Marketing

Ambient Scenting: The Complete Guide to Scent Marketing

Ambient scenting is the continuous, professional fragrancing of a commercial space so that it smells consistently of a chosen scent. It is the most common form of scent marketing: using fragrance deliberately to shape how people feel in a space and how they remember a brand. This guide explains the vocabulary, how ambient scenting works, what the research shows, what drives the cost and how to do it well in Singapore.

Scent marketing, ambient scenting, air scenting: the vocabulary

The industry uses several overlapping terms, and different markets prefer different ones. Knowing them makes it easier to compare suppliers and research.

  • Scent marketing is the umbrella term for using fragrance to influence how people experience a brand or space.
  • Ambient scenting, or ambient scent marketing, means fragrancing a space continuously at a low level. It is the usual term in the UK and much of Asia.
  • Air scenting and commercial scenting are the terms most used in the US for the same service.
  • Scent branding means using a distinctive signature scent as part of a brand’s identity. See our scent branding service.
  • Scent systems, scent diffusers and scent machines are the equipment. See our commercial scent systems and diffusers.
  • Sensory marketing is the wider discipline that covers scent alongside sound, sight and touch. See our guide to sensory marketing.

How ambient scenting works

Commercial ambient scenting uses cold-air diffusion, also called nebulizing or waterless diffusion. A small pump turns fragrance oil into a dry micro-mist that stays suspended in the air, with no water and no heat. The unit runs on a programmed cycle, so output follows opening hours and stays at a low, even level. Our explainer on how commercial scent diffusion works compares the technologies.

Smaller spaces use standalone or wall-mounted diffusers. Larger spaces, such as hotel lobbies, mall atriums and Grade A office lobbies, usually connect a unit to the air-handling system so the fragrance travels through the ductwork. In Singapore this system is called ACMV; see our HVAC and ACMV scent diffusion page.

Three things decide whether ambient scenting works: the fragrance, the level and the consistency. A beautiful fragrance at the wrong level, or one that lapses between refills, does more harm than good.

Why businesses use scent

Smell is processed in parts of the brain closely linked to emotion and memory, which is why a scent can bring back a place years later. For a business, that makes scent one of the few brand signals people take in without noticing, and remember without trying.

Academic research supports the commercial case, with some important caveats:

  • Spangenberg, Crowley and Henderson (Journal of Marketing, 1996) found shoppers rated a scented store and its products more positively than an unscented one.
  • Mattila and Wirtz (Journal of Retailing, 2001) found that scent and music which matched each other increased satisfaction and impulse buying.
  • Bosmans (Journal of Marketing, 2006) found that scent helps most when it is congruent with the products and setting.
  • Morrin and Ratneshwar (Journal of Marketing Research, 2003) found ambient scent improved brand recall.

The caveat is that these studies show effects exist, not how large they will be in a particular space. Fit and restraint matter more than any single fragrance, and results should be measured. Our article on scent marketing ROI explains how.

Where ambient scenting is used

What makes ambient scenting work, and what makes it fail

  • Fit. The scent should suit the brand, the products and the people. A congruent scent outperforms one that is merely pleasant.
  • Restraint. People should notice the scent on arrival and forget it minutes later. See scent intensity.
  • Consistency. The same scent, at the same level, in every location and after every refill.
  • Zoning. Entrances can carry more; desks, meeting rooms, food areas and treatment rooms usually need less or none.
  • Quality. Fragrance made for diffusion and formulated within the IFRA Standards.

The common failures are the reverse: overscenting, a library fragrance the business next door also uses, plug-in air fresheners that scent a metre around the socket, and equipment that nobody services.

Library scent or signature scent?

A library scent is quick to start and works well for many businesses. A bespoke signature scent takes longer and costs more, but it is exclusive and becomes a brand asset that can extend into products, packaging and gifts. Many businesses begin with a library scent and commission a signature scent once they understand how scent works in their spaces. Our guide to creating a signature scent covers the process.

What ambient scenting costs

Most ambient scenting is sold as a monthly programme that covers equipment, fragrance and servicing. The cost depends on the volume of air to be scented and the number of zones, the equipment (standalone units or an ACMV-connected system), the fragrance (library or bespoke) and how often the system is serviced. Buying a diffuser outright can look cheaper, but the oil, parts, staff time and risk of getting it wrong move to you. Quotes based on floor area alone, without a site visit, are a warning sign. Our guide to scent marketing costs in Singapore goes into detail.

Ambient scenting in Singapore

Singapore has its own conditions. Almost every commercial building runs air-conditioning throughout opening hours, which carries scent well but also removes it quickly. Entrances, where tropical heat and humidity meet chilled interiors, behave differently from the rest of a space. In multi-tenant buildings, connecting to the central ACMV usually needs landlord approval. And shoppers move between malls, streets and MRT stations in minutes, meeting a great deal of scent along the way, which makes a distinctive, well-judged scent more valuable. Singapore Airlines and ION Orchard are two well-known local examples of scent as part of a brand.

How to choose an ambient scenting provider

Our full guide on choosing a scent marketing provider in Singapore explains each question.

  • Who creates the fragrances, and are they formulated within the IFRA Standards? Ours are created by drom.
  • Will they assess airflow on site, or quote from floor area?
  • Can they offer both standalone and ACMV-connected systems, so the recommendation fits the space?
  • What does servicing include, and how often?
  • Who owns a bespoke scent, and on what terms?
  • What is the minimum contract period, and what happens to the equipment at the end?

Safety and wellbeing

Fragrance formulated within the IFRA Standards and diffused at a low level is widely used in public spaces. Good practice keeps scent away from food preparation, offers fragrance-free zones where people may be sensitive, and gives staff and visitors a simple way to raise concerns. Ambient scent should be described in sensory terms, such as fresh or calming, not as a treatment for any condition.

Frequently asked questions

What is ambient scenting?

The continuous, professional fragrancing of a commercial space at a low, consistent level, usually as a managed service covering equipment, fragrance and servicing.

Is ambient scenting the same as scent marketing?

Ambient scenting is the most common form of scent marketing. Scent marketing is the wider idea of using fragrance to influence how people experience a brand.

Does ambient scent marketing work?

Controlled studies have found effects on store evaluations, spending and brand recall, particularly when the scent fits the setting. Results vary, so measure against a baseline.

How strong should an ambient scent be?

Noticeable on arrival and unnoticed a few minutes later. If people comment on the strength, it is too high.

Can ambient scent be delivered through air-conditioning?

Yes. Larger spaces often connect a cold-air diffuser to the air-handling unit so the scent travels through the ductwork. In multi-tenant buildings this usually needs landlord approval.

Who provides ambient scenting in Singapore?

Several specialist providers operate in Singapore. We design, install and service ambient scenting programmes islandwide. Whoever you choose, use the questions above to compare them.
