Ultrasonic diffusers work by vibrating a small plate at high frequency under a mix of water and essential oil, turning it into a fine, visible mist. They are quiet, cheap and pleasant at home. They do not scale for business: they cover a small area, dilute the scent with water, add humidity, need constant refilling and cleaning, and offer little control. Commercial spaces use cold-air (nebulizing) diffusers instead.
How ultrasonic diffusers work
A ceramic disc vibrates at ultrasonic frequency beneath a water reservoir with a few drops of oil. The vibration breaks the surface into a cool mist that carries the fragrance into the room. Many double as humidifiers and night lights.
What they do well
- Quiet, simple and inexpensive.
- Gentle scent in a bedroom, living room or small office.
- No heat, so the oil is not burnt.
Why they don’t scale for business
- Coverage. Output suits a single room at home, not a lobby, shop floor or open-plan office.
- Water. Oil diluted in water gives a weaker, less consistent scent, and in Singapore adds moisture to air that is already humid.
- Maintenance. Small tanks need refilling and cleaning daily; standing water needs care to stay hygienic.
- Control. Few offer proper scheduling, zoning or fine intensity adjustment.
- Durability. They are not built to run every day for years.
What commercial spaces use instead
Cold-air diffusers atomise fragrance oil into a dry micro-mist with no water, on a programmed schedule, from a single room up to whole floors through the air-conditioning. Read our guide to nebulizing diffusers, the commercial scent diffuser buyer’s guide or see our commercial scent systems.
Frequently asked questions
How do ultrasonic diffusers work?
A disc vibrating at ultrasonic frequency turns water and oil into a fine mist that carries scent into the room.
Can I use an ultrasonic diffuser in my shop?
In a very small space, perhaps. For anything larger, coverage, control and maintenance become problems.
Do ultrasonic diffusers humidify the air?
Yes, a little. In Singapore’s climate that is rarely wanted indoors.
For help choosing, see our commercial scenting service.
