Scent marketing in Singapore is almost always sold as a monthly service. For a single standalone diffuser with a library scent and regular servicing, published rental packages from Singapore providers currently run from under S$100 to under S$300 a month per unit, depending on the size of the machine. Larger spaces, systems connected to the air-conditioning and bespoke signature scents are quoted individually, because the cost depends on the volume of air, the number of zones and the fragrance. What you are really paying for is not the machine but the fragrance, the calibration and the servicing that keep a space smelling right every day.
What a monthly scenting fee usually includes
- Equipment. The diffuser or diffusers, supplied on loan for the length of the contract.
- Fragrance. Refills of a library scent, or a bespoke signature scent.
- Installation and calibration. Placing units for airflow and setting intensity and schedules by zone.
- Servicing. Scheduled refills, cleaning, adjustments and replacement of faulty units.
Check each of these when comparing quotes. A low monthly figure that excludes servicing or limits refills is not a low price.
What drives the cost
Volume of air, not floor area
A double-height hotel lobby or mall atrium needs far more output than its floor area suggests, and constant door traffic removes scent quickly. Quotes based on square metres alone, without a site visit, tend to be wrong in one direction or the other.
Number of zones
A single boutique is one zone. A hotel may have an entrance, lobby, lift halls, corridors and a spa, each needing its own level. More zones usually means more units or a more complex system.
Standalone units or ACMV integration
Standalone and wall-mounted units are the simplest. Connecting a diffuser to the building’s air-handling unit costs more to set up, needs coordination with building management and, in multi-tenant buildings, landlord approval. Library or bespoke fragrance
A library scent has no development cost. A bespoke signature scent involves a brief, perfumer time and trial rounds before rollout, and is priced as a project on top of ongoing diffusion. See scent branding and signature scents.
Fragrance quality
Oils vary enormously. Fragrance created by a perfume house and formulated within the IFRA Standards costs more than generic oils bought from traders, and it performs better in diffusion, smells the same in every batch and is safer in shared spaces. Ours are created by drom.
Contract length
Longer contracts usually bring a lower monthly rate. Check the minimum term, what happens to the equipment at the end, and the notice period before you sign.
Buying a diffuser instead
Commercial-style diffusers are sold online from a few hundred dollars. The machine is only the start. You then pay for oil, replacement parts and your team’s time to refill, clean and adjust it, and you carry the risk of getting the scent level wrong. For one small room, buying can make sense. How to judge whether it is worth it
Work out the break-even. If a boutique turns over S$60,000 a month and scenting costs S$200 a month, scent needs to lift sales by about a third of one per cent to pay for itself. These figures are illustrative, but the principle holds: the threshold is usually low, and you will only know whether you have crossed it if you measure against a baseline. Warning signs in a quote
- No site visit, or a price based only on floor area.
- No information about who makes the fragrance.
- Servicing charged separately or limited.
- A long minimum term with unclear exit terms.
- A “hotel-inspired” scent that is simply a copy of a well-known brand’s fragrance.
